| PLEASANTON —
Foothill High School student Sharon Cao was someone others saw
as kind, friendly and always with a smile.
A top student in her sophomore class, Cao excelled in
journalism, world history and French.
A Pleasanton resident of seven years, Cao died early Sunday
morning in her sleep. She was 15.
Her family and friends have since been trying to cope with
her death, of which the cause is still unknown.
The Alameda County Coroners Bureau performed an autopsy
Monday, but has not yet determined a cause of death.
Sharons father, Yuming Cao, said she was a healthy teenager
with no previous medical problems.
About 200 students and staff from Foothill High gathered
Tuesday night for a candlelight vigil.
It was a way to sort of honor and celebrate Sharon,
Foothill Principal Kevin Johnson said. Its been tough for some
kids to get through, but Ive been proud of them.
Yuming Cao said the family is having a difficult time
dealing with this sudden tragedy.
Everybody in our family feels this is an unbelievable
nightmare, he said. We couldnt really believe this is a
reality.
Sharon Cao not only shined academically, but she also
played piano and was involved in the People to People program,
the Interact club, the California Scholarship
Federa-tion
and the Key Club. She also volunteered at the Pleasanton
Library.
She was planning to attend a Rotary Youth Leadership Award
camp next week.
She always tried to set her own standard really high, her
father said. Shes so self-motivated.
Having support from the school and from other community
organizations has been helpful and has given the family a
better sense of who their daughter was outside of their home.
Friends knew her for her sarcastic sense of humor and her
helpful nature.
Seeing the large turnout for her vigil reassured the Cao
family of her positive personality.
It was surprising for me, Yuming Cao said. So many people
love her.
Sharon Cao is also survived by her mom, Meihua Zhou, and
her 8-year-old sister, Susan Cao, a third-grader at Fairlands
Elementary School.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at
Harvest Valley Christian Church, 3200 Hopyard Road,
Pleasanton.
